GRAND CAYMAN
GRAND CAYMAN
THINGS TO DO
Scuba Diving: If Grand Cayman is known for one thing, it’s scuba diving. With hundreds of dive sites easily accessible both from shore and by boat, the island has options for divers of all levels and competencies. We recommend Living The Dream Divers dive shop. We really enjoyed diving at Eden Roc, but be warned that if cruise ships are docked in the harbor, you may will be able to hear some of the engine noises underwater.
Snorkeling: Cemetery Beach and Rum Point are our two favorite spots for snorkeling, although virtually the entire coastline is accessible to those with snorkeling gear. Expect to see a wide range of tropical fish and coral reef species while floating through crystal clear, warm water.
Rum Point: Located on the North side of the island, Rum Point is the perfect spot for a lazy afternoon. With beach chairs, hammocks, multiple bars, and a grille, it is a family-friendly hangout with something for everyone. It is a bit away from the action, but this is part of what makes it so nice.
Botanical Garden: This luscious escape is a gem of the island. With a wide range of plants, flowers, birds, ponds, and trails, you can easily spend a few hours exploring the grounds. Don’t be alarmed if you see some of the local iguanas hanging on the trails; don’t feed them and they won’t bother you!
Walking Trail: Mastic Trail, this hiking trail in an expansive nature reserve. You will see many different plants, trees & wildlife unique to the island.
PLACES TO EAT
Calypso Gill: If you’re on the search for delicious fish and good vibes in West Bay, look no further than Calypso. A spot frequented by locals and non-cruise ship travelers, this is the perfect spot to sip a beer or drink a daiquiri after an adventure-filled morning. We had the fresh catch sandwich and Cay Beer, and they didn’t disappoint! The bill is a bit pricey, but the ambiance, ocean views, and freshness of ingredients certainly make it worth your while.
Catch: Another great water-front restaurant in West Bay, Catch offers quick service, fresh fish, and many vegetarian and gluten-free options. We had the fish tacos and Greek salad, which hit the spot. Great for lunch or dinner.
Tillie’s: This is the chicest property we have visited in Grand Cayman. Although we didn’t stay at the hotel, it is a top-notch property with high-end amenities and a gourmet beach-front restaurant with a large menu. With unspoiled ocean views (and incredible sunsets!), a Bohemian vibe, and a full repertoire of delicious cocktails including piña coladas and other island-inspired drinks, this is the ideal spot for happy hour.
Island Naturals Café: A MUST for gluten-free travelers or health nuts. Amazing variety of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options (including many gluten-free baked goods). Definitely try one of their curries and smoothies. Extremely friendly service and down-home feel.
South West Collective: Run by a friendly Aussie ex-pat, this café is the ideal spot for a coffee and healthy bite to eat near the main harbor. Whether you’re looking for a dirty chai latte (with 2 shots of espresso!) and baked goods or a full meal, Southwest café has it all.
Jessie’s Juice Bar Cafe: This is a gem inside the main shopping area of Camana Bay with an extensive menu full of health food options. Another great spot for the gluten-free traveler. If you’re stopping by for breakfast or lunch, Jesse’s has something for you!
Agave: DANK authentic Mexican food with impeccable service and fresh ingredients. Don’t miss out on the fresh catch enchiladas! The sweet Mexican corn and guacamole are also crowd favorites.
PLACES TO STAY
Shangri-La Bed & Breakfast: This is a cute, family-run bed & breakfast located in West Bay. Although not part of the international Shangri-La brand, it is the perfect location for families who want quaint, apartment-style accommodations rather than a large hotel. The property has a pool, hot tub, and snorkel gear that you can borrow free of charge. We had a lovely experience here and would definitely stay again.
Four Seasons: Luxe accommodation directly on Seven Mile Beach. This posh spot will have you considering never even leaving the hotel. With multiple restaurant options, beach chairs, and a pool-you should be set!
Tillie’s: Boho chic accommodation directly on Seven Mile Beach. Definitely a high-end property, but worth every penny.
AirBnb:There are abundant AirBnb rentals on the island, whether you are looking for something directly on Seven Mile Beach or in a more secluded part of the island.
TRANSPORTATION
Although not 100% necessary (especially if you’re staying on Seven Mile Beach), renting a car is the easiest way to get around the island. There are many car rental services at the airport for a reasonable price. Remember to drive on the left side of the road! Note: we rented from Budget and booked through Priceline, and it was ~$22/day.
