MEXICO CITY
What I've Done Over My Three Trips to CDMX
I’ve been to Mexico City 3 times and each time I’ve visited totally different spots and had completely different experiences. The culture, amazing restaurants, kind people, shopping, and charm of the city feels magical. CDMX is perfect for a long weekend trip if that’s all you have, but you coul easily spend weeks or months here!
If you’d like to see a map of all of my recommendations, head to my Google Map here.
Food:
Mexico City has everything from a hole in the wall taco shop to fine dining to Michelin stars. There’s a comprehensive filter on my map above, but so far I’ve loved these places the most.
Taco spots: Orinoco, Las Rejas…but honestly, just wander around and grab one here and there as you go!
Fine dining: Filigrana, Expendio de Maiz, Rosetta
Everything in between: Contramar, Madre, Churreria El Moro
Bars: Cometa, Salon Palomilla, Sunday Sunday, Handshake Speakeasy, Supra Roma Rooftop, Baltra, Gin Gin, Botanico, Pandora
Activities:
Xochimilco…this felt like a really local experience. CDMX used to be on canals so it gives you a peak into the past. You can take an uber here and don’t let them charge you more than the flat rate listed on the signs…the cost is per boat, not person (around 40 USD). You can order tacos, hire a mariachi band, buy cocktails, and enjoy the ride!
Food Tour…an absolute MUST. We did a more authentic experience in the historic area, and it was nice to see a different part of the city and see how locals ate! You can book the one we did here.
Hot Air Balloons…this is a really nice way to see the pyramids from above. You can also add on a tour of the ruins to immerse yourself fully after as well. It was a really beautiful experience but do know it is long and you wake up early, around 3:45 AM pickup! Volare was a great company.
Chapultepec Castle…a beautiful park and stunning castle. This is a great way to wander around and feeling like you’re escaping the city!
Frida Khalo’s House…this personally wasn’t my favorite tour, but many people love this! Frida’s art is definitely gruesome, but her history is really interesting. I actually paired this with a churros and biking history tour which was really fun! Make sure you book tickets in advance.
Museums…there’s SO many museums in Mexico City. Many are in architectural beauties and give so much history on Mexico. I’d combine this with Palacio del Bella Artes.
Day Trips…San Miguel, Puebla, Tolantango Caves, volcano hikes. There’s so many options to see surrounding areas for a day if you’re up for it!
Parque Quetzalcoatl…I haven’t been here, but this Guadi-esque park looks insane. It’s full of tiles, beautiful stained glass, and greenery. You do need to make reservations in advance and it isn’t cheap for a park entry, but it will be beautiful and private!
Shopping:
The Roma Norte area is PRIME for shopping. If you can, I recommend leaving room in your luggage. You can find anything from vintage stores, artisan markets, customer perfumeries, home goods, and ateliers.
My favorite places included Irene Buffa (pre-loved luxury), Casa Bazar, Fueguia 1833 (perfume), The Erre Garage Co (men’s), Proyecto Rufine Roma Norte (home goods).
Stays:
The Brick Hotel is such a beautiful fan favorite, and if you want to get luxury at a more affordable rate then the Four Seasons is a win. I really recommend staying in the Condesa or Roma Norte area!
Notes:
Traffic in Mexico City is BAD. Give yourself an extra 15 minutes everywhere you go…but know Ubers work really well!
Getting an upset stomach is very common…make sure you don’t brush your teeth with the sink water and steer clear of fresh items in markets.
