CARTAGENA
The Best of Cartagena, Colombia
Cartagena is such an amazing city. It’s got such beautiful history and architecture, a great food scene, fun nightlife, and the best beach vibes. It’s easy to spend a long weekend there or a month, and has so many thing to offer!
My favorite things I did:
Boat day to the Rosario Islands – an absolute must. Your captains can stop for swims, on the islands, or Cholon, which is an island where other boats will raft up and day party.
Spend a day walking around the walled city, or Centro Historico. There’s so many boutiques, ornate doors, and bars to pop in and out of. If you’re into jewelry, Colombia is one of the best spots to buy emeralds. I loved Lucy Jewelry! Walk down Carrea 7 for the iconic view of the Clock Tower, pop into Mirador Gastro Bar for a cocktail with a view.
Depending on what you see and how quickly, you can also walk around Getsemani or spend a whole day there on your own. It is slightly more authentic and boho feel than Centro Historico, with lots of murals and in the evening stop by Plaza de la Trinidad.
Head out to Castillo San Felipe for some history. You can also add in Cerro de la Popa which is the highest viewpoint.
Food:
Make sure you eat authentic empanadas!
Nightlife/Drinks:
Alquimo (sunset drinks and night club!), Ajeno, Mondo, Hotel Movich (for views), Moreno (club vibes).
Best Spots to Stay:
I recommend staying within the city walls or right outside in Getsemani. You’ll be able to walk to all the shops, tour points, and nightlife. Typically there’s more boutique, romantic hotels in this area as compared to the resorts on the beach! However, if you do stay outside of the central historic district, the hotels are usually larger and have more amenities.
Sophia Hotel, Sofitel Legend, and Charleston Santa Theresa all have great pools and are centrally located. The Charleston Santa Theresa also has the best courtyard with vines hanging down the walls. I’d also recommend at least grabbing drinks at Sophia Hotel for the views!
If you want to stay out of the city for a few days, you can also rent out private villas and islands on the Rosario Islands. I’ve heard amazing things from other people we met, and you can get great deals on Airbnb!
